Raccoon Attack - Need Advice For Ailing Rooster

Sometimes it's hard to know for sure, he may be really, really sore and have swelling that makes breathing hard, or it may be worse. It's hard to say since we can't see him. If he's drinking, I would continue to offer water often. I always give them time, you can always decide to end it if you feel he is suffering and there isn't hope of getting better. I've seen some birds recover from some horrific things, but every case is different. :hugs

Hello coach723, they are resilient creatures that is for sure. I’ve been giving him poultry vitamin water and a bit of yogurt. I hold the water to his beak and he takes small sips, I’m not sure that he’s getting enough, I have a waterer in with him but his eyes are closed so he cannot find it on his own.
I’m holding out hope for him to make it but it’s just a day by day situation.Thank you so much for your encouragement in this!
Kind regards,
tj

How is your rooster doing today?

Hello HippieAtHeart, thank you so much for asking. Actually he seems to be doing just a bit better. 🙂 I could not find the antibiotic or the poultry nutridrench that coach723 mentioned above at any of our feed stores, so I had to order it online so hopefully it will be arriving soon.
He seems to drink a little bit I’m not sure he’s getting enough, and I offer him yogurt which he’ll eat a little. I took him outside into a pen and he actually stretched and sunned himself, it made my heart smile. But sadly, his eyes remain closed.
Thank you again for your help!
Kind regards,
tj

Aww I’m glad to hear he’s (what’s his name, if you have one?) doing a bit better than he was, that’s great he sunned himself. They are so cute when they do that. That will be good when the antibiotics come in, that should help him :)

Hello, here are photos of him. He still holds his eyes closed, I’m hoping that changes eventually. 🤞 He seems alert but he rests a lot, loves being outside in the sun.
I made a soupy mixture of ground chicken feed and poultry vitamin water and he eats a little of that, he just eats so little. Is there anything that I should feed him at this point?
His name is Jackson Henry (middle names of grandsons) 🙂, and he is the lone survivor at this point. We are going through the chicken house and run with a fine tooth comb.
I’ll keep you posted, delivery of the medicine and nutridrench arrives tomorrow. 🙏
Thank you so much for the advice and support! 😊

Wow, what a handsome boy Jackson Henry is! I like how you named him :) That’s good the antibiotics and nutrudrench are getting to you tomorrow, shipping has been a nightmare with this coronavirus. I know that my hen didn’t start drinking or eating much until about a week ago and she was injured a month ago, I think they know what they can handle. My hen did really love wet cat food though, the first time I gave it to her she scarfed it down. The next few days she ate some every day then I guess after a weekor so she got tired of but started eating some regular feed. I dug her up a lot of worms from my compost bin and also gave her grapes, strawberries, cucumbers, and watermelon. It’s not something I’d give a lot of normally but she needed liquid and these gave her that. Let me know how he makes out with the medicine tomorrow :)

Hello again, just wanted to update this post. Sadly, during the night, our rooster took a turn for the worse. Early this morning I found him lethargic, breathing heavy with his head tilted off to the side. His comb, wattles were no long bright red but a dull pink tinged with white. He would try to pick up his head but couldn’t, almost looked as if he suffered a stroke. I made the decision at that time to end his suffering, my husband ended his life today with a gun to the head.
The irony today was as soon as we ended his suffering, the ups delivery come up the driveway with the meds I had ordered in hopes of saving our rooster.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your advice, concern, words of encouragement and friendship in this whole ordeal. I’m so happy I found this community.
Blessings all,
tj

I'm so sorry for your loss. :hugs

So sorry that Jackson Henry took a turn for the worse. At least you and your husband were able to give him a quick end when his time came. I think it’s so nice you did so much for him and had him out sun bathing in his last days. It’s always hard to lose a pet. If you ever want to talk about anything feel free to message me. Hugs to you :hugs
