I would say you have a bigger gap than 2 or 3 inches somewhere.
A racoon can climb most fences, and if there is no cover on top...and if you leave the coop door open... or have an open coop situation, your chickens are free for the taking for a multitude of varmints.
Instead of staying up all night, spend that time securing your coop so your chickens are safe at night time.

The secure coop i have today is a result of many a determined hungry preditor showing where my coop setup weaknesses were.
The preditors still come around, hoping maybe i forgot to close the door. I still see them on my cameras, but they cant get in and go away hungry still.
