Raccoon problem... HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS HORRIBLE CREATURE.

Quote:
Of the 8 were a set of triplet kits, a couple of young one's and adults...I believe I got them all through the following week. What I found to be most disgusting about the critters is marking of 'their' territories. One season they were intent on dropping scat right below our bedroom window. To say the very least it was fowl. It became a nightly ritual even after using various kinds of deterrents. Eventually we put a electric fence wire around the area. I have to admit, I cracked a smile in my deepest slumber when I could hear them getting a good jolt. Solved the problem. From there they moved to my garden area letting me know how disgusted they were with me. I copped an attitude and from then on it's a live trap and a .22. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Trapping predators is for the most part futile because it doesn't stop predator loses. Coons and opossums are (at least around here) nocturnal. Have a predator proof coop and lock your birds up at night. For daytime predators one of the easiest "cures" is an electric fence, they're cheap and easy to put up. The goal is to cut predator loses to zero and the only way to do that is to prevent them from accessing your animals without losing the benefits they provide.

Yeah. Golden Malrin. I don't want to tell anyone to use it in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. But I have heard that mixing it with a little coke and coons love it. Local guy did this and heard a lapping noise and turned around and his dog was drinking it. The dog died, eventually. So yeah, be careful. But yes, I've heard this is very effective for keeping coons out of the sweet corn.

My only successful fix ( if you're an animal lover, do not read on) is to get some Fly Bait. It's a blue, smelly powder in a can. Put one scoop in a foil pan of milk. Set 1/2 of a Snickers bar next to it in the area of the problem. Racoons LOVE chocolate! They eat the Snickers, get REAL thirsty and drink the Fly Bait. Wala! I've found a Possum on the top of the cage, in the process of taking a step, and literally "frozen in his tracks". Ya do whatcha gotta do.

I have learned here in Florida that the animal control center which is a block north of me, releases the animals immediately. I used to take all the critters I captured in live traps there. Until one day, they took the trap with the racoon in it, walked through the door where I thought was where they kept them until they relocated them....boy was I wrong. I walked outside and I saw him carrying the cage out the back door and released the animal, which was basically my backyard.

When I asked them about that they advised me, that they don't relocate the animals they just let them go, so whomever brings animals to animal control they release them in my backyard. Which explains why I kept getting opposum and racoons in my yard. So long story short, invest in a live trap and either shoot them or drown them. Who knows if they are rabid and I don't wait around to find out.

Hope this helps... Happy New Year!!!

I understand that flybait (Golden Malrin) is quick and effective, but doesn't discriminate. It will kill everything that eats it, including your pets. So use it with the utmost caution if that's the route you choose to go. Personally, I'd avoid it. Live-trap and kill by whatever means you can. If you can shoot it, all the better. If you need to drown it, it's a relatively quick death, just don't mention it here or anywhere else because you will get blasted by some.

The goal is to cut predator loses to zero and the only way to do that is to prevent them from accessing your animals without losing the benefits they provide. I have to respectfully disagree. I see no benefits to an animal that is overpopulated in some areas and will die a long, painful death when they get diseased and die from rabies or distemper.

We have great success using a dogproof trap with a can of tuna as the lure.

Of course a little quiet time on the porch with a cold beer and a .22 on your lap will do the trick too... ;-)

this has not been my experience you must not know how to trap LOL when you eliminate the predators it is a lot easier to limit pred losses LOL
