Is the non-coated also 19g ? Get the heaviest (thickest) gauge you can, and if plain is sturdier, forget about the cute black coating.

Of course safety is my top concern. I'm mainly interested in black not for the look of the run itself but for visibility of my two absolutely stunning slws lol. The black coating makes the wire harder to see, making it easier to see your birds. If you look at the photos of the Carolina Coops, many of them appear to have no hardware cloth, but it's there, the black makes it hard to see.

You can even paint the hardware cloth. And yes, it’s unbelievably strange, but colored wire does disappear.

Over time the vinyl coating (and even paint) will wear off in places. The birds will most likely pick at the loose pieces of vinyl and eat what they can, but I don’t think that will kill them. Also, as time rocks on, you can always repaint the wire as the paint ages.
