We had a bad raccoon problem last year and I lost my whole flock! But I got a lot more chicks and they are all full grown. But the coons are back! I've seen tracks everywhere! One of my buff orpington hens got out of the pen for a couple hours and by the time I found her it was too late! My orpingtons are in a breeding pen all by themselves The top is not super secure and the reason she got out was my got jumped up and pushed the top of the pen off to the side a little bit. well she flew out. Luckily out of 6 hens and a rooster she was the only one! Then the next night the whole top was totally messed up and the goat was locked up! Another hen was missing. Then I found her body too. :*( I was SO upset. Well I had just gotten an order for 24 fertile buff orpington eggs. The person canceled and I was left with all these eggs. So tonight I went out there and I found my only BO rooster's carcus in the barn!! So I moved the remaining 4 bo hens back into the normal coop with the others that is very very secure. But I have no rooster anymore for breeding! But thank heavens I had got that order before he died! The guy canceled and know I am incubating them myself so I can have more BO chicks soon! i guess it was somewhat of a good ending. But we still gotta find this raccoon! He's is very big! We saw him walking down the road a couple weeks back and He looked like a big DOG!! It's very scary! any advice?

Until you secure your coop and run properly you will continue to lose birds.

Step #1. Improve security with 2x4 wire and 1/2" hardware cloth. Build a solid coop/run.

Step #2. Trap that raccoon. Build or buy a trap. Shoot it. Set the trap again, as there will be more.

Sorry to sound brash, but many of the issues people raise on this forum start with them knowing about a problem, doing nothing about it, and expecting results to change. You are taking the right step though in that you want to change the end result.

Best of luck.

my mom is going to pick up a trap today

very excited about that. My coop is very secure and they can't get in or I think they already would have been all winter!! But I got them out of the breeding pen and so I think we are safe for know! can't wait to get rid of that bandit!
