Raccoons!

I have been told by several reliable sources that if you lock up your birds, see if your 2-5 year old can open the locks. Raccoons are on about the same IQ level with their hands and if a child that age can unlock something, chances are a coon will be able to.

I know exactly how you feel! We lost one hen a couple of weeks ago to a coon. We thought we had secured the coop, as we had seen the coon the night before! But he also pulled the hen through a very small opening! We borrowed the neighbors trap and caught the little WEASEL the very next night! We put more mesh around any openings we thought another coon could squeeze through. Luckily we have not had another attack. So sorry for your loss.

I lost one of my 10-week-old Australorp pullets just two days ago.
The forum tells me it was a racoon. It killed my chicken and took its head.
Only the head.

I just wonder why it didn't eat the whole chicken?

What does a racoon trap look like?
