Racist chickens.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

X4 You need to introduce new birds slowly over a several weeks time from a cage or fenced off area but within the flock at all times. You can't just throw them into together immediately. This will cause chaos. Let them see but not touch for several weeks. When mixing day comes, it should go more smoothly. Always watch closely for that day and the rest of the week. And always intervene if it turns bloody.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

This is my introduction cage just put some baby's in it this day so you need to introduce your new hen slowly for a week or so and then they will except her but you should never just toss a new chicken in with an old flock .....

If she is a completely different color it doesn't help either. I started out with just a flock of all black australorps. I decided I wanted 2 more, but could only get one australorp and one wyandotte. The new black australorp integrated quickly, but it took much longer for the lighter colored wyandotte pullet to be accepted.

Whether it was the color or not I don't know.

Just follow the advice others have stated about a slow introduction and you should be ok. There might be some squabbling...but it will be ok as long as no one is getting seriously hurt.

If we get a new color we always get two, our chickens have always been racist about any chicken who stands out! :)

Just curious, what is in their water? AVC wouldn't be that dark would it?

Welcome to BYC - humans have a lock on racism - chickens just beat up strangers or those that are smaller regardless of color/breed. Chicken society is like mean girls in high school.
