Racoon attack! Need your help.

A 50lb+ raccoon. attacked my buff. Though I lost her. When I got the raccoon away from her she was severly damaged. No beak, swollen head, damaged comb. Eyes shut. Punctures. Not sure if she'll have vision at all. Thought I could allow her to pass quietly but she's still alive. Happened early Thurs am. Should I try to rehab her? Couldn't get water in to her tonight. Not even sure how to get in in her but I tried. Antibiotics? Might have found a vet that can look at her. She's pretty bad. I don't want her to suffer. Right now she's in a seperate cage in a safe quiet area. Do they regenerate their beaks? Her body isn't too bad but her head is.

Wow! What a hard thing to go through.

With no beak and puncture wounds, honestly, if it were me, I would let her go. It will be hard to recover and if the punctures get infected, well, I hate to think of the pain. If she can't see and is without a beak (they don't regenerate to that degree) I would worry about her quality of life.

I would make her comfortable and sleep on it. Don't be hasty in your decision. Others will be along to offer more. Take all into consideration and make the best decision you can. You are there on the spot and only you can decidse.

Without a beak would be like without your hands and mouth. I personally think wish such a degree of head trauma, it may be best to let her go. Body trauma can repair because she can put in the nutrients to do so... if she can't eat, she can't recover. Sorry for the attack.

such a severe injury will need a vet... basic wound care until you can get to one (flush the wound with sterile saline.... keep it moist)
China Chicks over at the EZBYC location had a similar injury >pig crunched on head and like yours broke off beak) but it did not make it...

Julie, I am so sorry. Sounds terrible. Hope you got that coon!! I have to agree with everyone else tho....I say...let her go. Her beak will not grow back..and her quality of life, without site and a beak....well...If you can, take her to a vet, and let him put her down peacefully. Again, I am so very sorry.

I had a dog do the same thing in a way and I have banamine on hand for my goats and cows. I took a syringe and filled 2'cc and gave mine a shot of it and she just went to sleep without any pain that she was in earlier. I think it was more humane than wringing the neck or anything else. So sorry to hear about your hen, and I do hop[e you got that coon as it will be back..

I'd take her to the vet and see what he says...then it's your decision...
If it was my bird, if she wasn't in pain, then I'd do whatever I could to say her...
but with such a traumatic injury, it might be better to just let her go...
