Last month we had 5 seperate attacks causing us the lose of 18 of our hens. Each time I reinforced thinking for certain I was ahead of him, WRONG. He climbed straight up the wall and even busted in the window on the door. Well I baited the trap with stinky cat food and first night we got him. I left it right where his path of travel was with no hiding it needed. 45 lb Ricky the Racoon who was dispersed with. No pleasure but some relief after cleaning up his many midnight snack messes. He had gotten to the point of killing and not eating them. Senseless killing.
Our local wildlife and animal control told me phone numbers of people to call that would relocate whatever I caught for $65 each! They also told me where I could buy the trap, so I am jealous yours are so helpful.
My girls are just starting to feel safe enough to roost again instead of hiding in corners and under nests. I still set the trap each night in case a friend comes looking for him.
Back again with good news. Last night we caught a baby coon first at 10pm in the TS trap(marshmallows). Hubby let it take a swim, then reset the trap with the disposed baby in the back of the trap. We went to bed. I have a baby monitor set up so we can hear what is going on in the barn. At 1 am we heard a trap snap. This morning when we went to check we found another baby in the med size trap and the Mom in the big trap with the dead baby. We did spot another baby walking around outside the barn so set the traps again. We so hope this will be the whole family and all my girls will be safe again. This is the first time in 10 yrs that we have seen a raccoon on our property. We live on 4 wooded acres outside of town so are a bit surprised this is a first. Others tell me rabies wiped out the general population around here a few yrs back but now they are making a comeback. I'm hoping for another 10 yrs coon free!! Again, so much help on this site, thanks for all who advised us! Lynn

Nice work! Baiting a trap with a baby (better if alive, but dead works, too!) is a sure way to catch the mother. Depending on the youngster's age you mentioned seeing, it might be unable to hunt/gather for itself and will make a return trip to where food is known. I'd keep the traps out a little longer.
Woke up this morning with one in my trap. second one this month. i use the nite guards and have not seen a possum or any other animal, but the coons seem to ignore them. my dh was out of town and could not do anything about it this a.m., so i brought it to work with me for one of the guys to take care of it.
i just don't see how something so small can take a grown chicken off. i have lost many chickens, i know to coons and possums. it just baffles me that they can carry them away.
FORTY FIVE POUNDS! Ye gods. I fear the one I have left is too crafty to catch but I keep my trap set 24/7. I once set traps vertically on a down spout in Florida to catch rats so it is just a matter of time. Caught two mice in one trap the other night. This coon is going down. Permanently. L
Last night caught another baby coon in a trap and Hubby took care of another that was walking around looking for Mom. That makes 1 Mom and 5 kits in 3 days of buying the traps. Hopefully that is it. Reinforced the nursery pen again. Really, nothing will get in there now!! Sure hope this is the last of them. Lynn
I have been trying for a week to catch this raccon....
1st night set the trap with some feed and marshmallows.........caught nothing
2nd night same
3rd night scrambled eggs...................caught the stray cat
4th night chicken leg.............................two cats in one night
5th-7th............................all cats
I set the trap between the coopand the house right next to the garden. I don't cover the trap. ( it's a live trap)
I know this coon is out there saw him Sunday night in the neighbors yard and saw him this morning when leavin for work.
This coon has killed two ducks. caught him red handed.
