Racoon Trouble--Please Help!

Sorry Ma'am but that is like peacefully coexisting with terrorist. Their job in life is to eat things and once they find your seafood and chickens they wont go away. If the AC said you can kill it then it must be ok. I reccomend trap and shoot or just shoot. MY modus operandi is SSS.

By the way coons noses are far superior to humans, and I have never known a boy child that did not pee outside when he got the chance. Maybe the idea of mom telling them to was the problem.

RADIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had terrible trouble with our garden and pests this year! The deer AND Racoons!! They love garbage, let me tell you! They have eaten all the stuff in our compost pile and garden. Luckily, we haven't lost any hens yet.

In our state (SC) you can not capture, kill, or relocate a Racoon, nor will Animal Control do anything about it, unless you irritate the sh*t out of them.

BUT, when I spoke with them, they said to put a radio outside on a talk radio station, baseball games, politics, whatever, and leave it on all thetime. Raccoons, I've been told (but am getting a different idea of them now, based on the hatred from this board towards them) is that they are just as scared of us as we are of them. They will not come around if they hear human voices.

Also, as for the pee...Human pee will not scare them off. It would have to be something Carnivoris. Such as foxes, wolves, mountain lion and the like. Since we as human's eat meat and vegitation that particular scent in our urine is diluted.

however, I have not actually tried this, as the radio has worked so far. We actually don't have it in it's normal place anymore because my hubby took it for his shop. But I think that it's scared them off for good. I have also heard that the radio in the attic is also good for squirrals that like to hibernate there for the winters.

Try it and see....chances are...you have a radio that you can use outside somewhere and you're not having to front a lot of $$ for electrical wire, which probably wouldnt' work anyways, once they learn to climb a nearby tree and drop down!

Let me know how it turns out!

This is true in rural areas, and maybe suburbs, but I can for sure say, they could care less about two legged giants with puny teeth. Suckers kill pets on back porches in cities and will just give you a glance as it continues to pry open your trash can to eat leasurly in front of you.

Yep, the more you tolerate them or shoo them away, the more they will get used to you. Country coons will run the first time they encounter you. In the city, or like at campgrounds they are use to people. You got two choices as I see it. Shoot the thing, or keep feeding it your ornamental fish. You can fix your coop/run to be pretty much predator proof, but you don't want some ugly thing around the perimeter of your nice looking pond.
Shoot it, God put so many of them around cause He knew we would be killing them. Another words, it's the natural order of things. Last I heard from my trapper buddy pelt prices are up for most things.

My mom has a coon problem around her house. We trapped/killed/relocated several already. She got tired of having to ask us for help and went to the garden store. They gave her a bottle of "fox urine" to spray around. Not sure exactly what it is (I don't think it is "real" fox urine)...but so far, she thinks it is working to keep coons away. I was thinking of getting some to spray around my coop area. Next time I go over to her place, I'll find out what it is.

Actually it is real fox urine. You can buy a few different species of spray urine in most sporting goods store. Hunters use it for different things. I have a bottle of fox urine here. I use it in the spring whenever I have fox problems too attract them to an area away from the chickens. I still had racoon problems while the fox were around.Donna

Got time for one or two more thoughts? We were losing a hen a day to foxes for about a week, while we were prepping an acre around the coop for electric poultry fencing. (Premier1 brand) which we tied into our horse pasture electro-braid. Keeping fingers crossed, but except for one black racer caught eating an egg, (DH picked it up and tossed it out of the penned area) we haven't had any more predator problems. We also spray paint a bright spot on backs of possums and coons that we've trapped in the past- turn them loose down the road apiece (don't ask/don't tell) and so far they haven't been back. And thank you guys, I'm gonna get some fox urine because we sure see them every day... thanks for all the advice.
