there once was a lady in my area advertising ragdoll cats for sale, i wanted one sooo bad i figured cat, kitten what the hay! omg!! it was horrible! they where her "breeders" and had lived a life in a cage stacked on top of each other in a trailer!! i wanted to snatch up everyone of those poor creatures and bring them home!! she wanted 300 buck for cats that where 7+ years old, matted to high heaven and had no socialization!! i tried to convince her to let me have the oldest cat for free, he really needed out of there but she wouldnt do it! we drag in strays all the time and i am sooo glad when i see other people who have such big hearts to help animals in need. give yourself a pat on the back for being such an animal lover. and hey, 2 more cats? not really that much to take care of LOL
I wish I was closer. I've been looking for another ragdoll for awhile. One of my housecats is part ragdoll and he's such a sweetie.

OMG they are SO CUTE. I've wanted a Ragdoll or Maine Coon for a long time, but with four cats was not willing to take on more. All I can say is Thank God you live on the other side of the country! Sadly, we are now down to three - I had to put one of my sweet babies down a few weeks back. I miss him so much every day. Some day I'll be ready for another, but not for quite a while. Enjoy your babies, and thank you for giving them and their mom a chance. I know you'll find good homes for those cuties.

My friend and I was just talking about Ragdoll cats. You see, she "owned" the original cat that the kitties all came from. The history always says that Ann Baker got the mother cat from her neighbor Mrs. Pennels but they didn't live by each other - not even in the same town. Mrs. Pennels was not only my friend's grandmother but also my cousin's mother-in-law. My friend couldn't have cats at her house so it lived at her grandmother's.
My friend doesn't remember the cat being hit by a car, just that her grandmother gave the cat to Mrs. Baker.
I do remember hearing the stories about the cat being inserted with non-cat genes at the local university (UCRiverside). It was sort of a family joke. Each time we told the story, the type of genes it had been given changed.
I remember Ann Baker as a sweet old lady who played the piano at church and raised cats. However, my friend assures me that she wasn't always sweet. I have a slight memory of going to her house and there being tons of cats. I stayed in the car it smelled so bad. Mrs. Pennels, known to everyone as "Meme" took care of the nursery at the same church.
My step father, a chemist at UCR who had heard the stories, once went to Baker's house for a ragdoll demonstration. She would give tours of her cattery for a fee. He said that during part of the tour, she'd show how the cats just flopped like a doll and lacked a sense of pain. To demonstrate that, she'd turn on the stove and hold them so close to the flame that their hair would start to burn but the cat showed no acknowledgment of what was going on. He said that the demonstrations were inhumane and was surprised that the humane society never shut her down.
That's my entire knowledge about their beginnings. My friend is glad that some sites have photos of her cat - she never had one.

Yikes! What a sad horrible story. People are heartless at times. I hope most of it was just talk!
I foster kittens too for my local cat rescue. It is such a great thing that you are doing. Keep it up!

OK, I can't keep our human kids on hold much longer. These guys will be availble only until sun 7/6 then they will stay and become part of our crazy farm forever. LOL Their momma was spayed yesterday poor girl looks so sad and misses the kittens. 1 more week until she can be reuinited. Speak now or forever hold your peace!
