I am considering using railroad ties dug into the ground as a base for the Dog Kennel we are using for a chicken run. Is there any reason to be concerned about the creosote and chemicals on the railroad ties?

I hope they are safe, I've used them for nine years to keep predators from digging under. I've always wondered about the fumes tho esp when it's hot. Nothing digs under them tho! (fingers crossed!).

Nine years is a pretty good track record.

I have a slight slope where I want to put the kennel so I thought I would try and take care of two things at once. Manage predator digging and leveling.

I wouldn't use them. They're very toxic and I wouldn't want railroad ties around anything that I was going to eat - not near the garden, not near eggs, not near broilers. I won't have them around my horses, either.
