Rain and chickens

Mine don't like change. When they wake up to a new white world they stay inside for a couple of days before any venture out. This snow fell during the day when they were already out. The change was gradual enough they never went inside.
Snow Feb 2013.JPG

I leave my pop door open during the day and let them decide if they want to go out. Sometimes mine seem to enjoy rain in the warmer weather, I think they are out looking for worms that the rain brings to the surface. Sometimes in summer they seek shelter but often not. A cold rain is a different story.

I leave my pop door open whether it is snowing or raining, 100* F or below 0* F, windy or calm. They know what they want to do better than I do.

Thank you so much. I guess it depends on the chickens

First time my chickens got 'soaked' I was concerned as it was chilly.
They looked like 'drowned rats' on the roost, but when I stuck my hand under the feathers they were dry and warm next to the skin. Quit worrying after that.
Young chicks and silkies may be a different story.
I let mine decide, some seem to love it, others stay under cover....same goes for snow.

I live near the coast in the low country and it seems like its always raining. My chickens don't mind the rain because I guess they are used to it. They like the bugs and worms that surface during the rain. I've seen them out with lighting hitting all around. I wonder if I'll go out and have fried chicken one day. They have plenty of shelter if they want it and unless its a serious pounding down pour, I usually see them out and about like nothings going on. The climate is warm and humid in SC so they don't get much freezing or snow around here.
