Rain Barrel Water System

We have 23 birds as of right now, and may inherit a couple more bourbon red turkeys next weekend (as of right now there are 17 chickens, 6 turkeys, all of which are pretty young right now.)

oh cool............

I'm curious to find out if the turkeys will use the water nipples, let us know!

on another note, I'd be concerned about having too much water just sitting around in a barrel. the longer it sits, the most likely it will grow bacteria. I'd rather refill a smaller system and keep it fresher than have it sitting around longer getting yucky........but that's just me

You can get a pressure regulation valve to keep the pressure about 5 psi.

Also agrees that the horizontal nipples are far superior to the verticals for several reasons,
mostly the dripping but I water in the coop.

Is there a particular valve you would recommend? I must admit I am completely ignorant when it comes to this, but I am trying to learn!

If you are using gravity fed water no need for a pressure regulator, it's only when you hook them directly up to pressurized water supplies (like your houses plumbing) that you need the regulator...

A 30 or 55 gallon barrel when full of water and tapped out the bottom will only be about 1 psi, more as you elevate it and continue the plumbing downward but even at 12 feet it's only about 5 psi, no need to regulate that for the nipples...

Thank you for sharing your video. You covered everything really well, and had good info about deep litter method, ventilation, water supply, and possible need for division of coop in future for new birds. Excellent planning! Did you do a lot for security mesh, like burying it against digging predators? I may have missed it if you talked about it.Thanks for good information, and the time you spent explaining your set up.

Consider using a first flush diverter system. It's what I use on my cistern for drinking water and would work great for your chicken coop. Simply Google first flush diverter and you will see many examples of these in action.
