Rainwater Collection System in Cold Climates

I want to install a system using PVC with nipples for automatic watering and was wondering if the water in the pipes freezes.

Yes, it will freeze in the pipes and blow out the nipples.

I know because when I had the in-town flock and installed a nice nipples-on-pipes system we actually had winter that year and I lost the whole thing.

Just wondering if anyone has a rainwater collection watering system in colder climates. If so, what do you do to keep it from freezing? I'm about to bust out the heater waterer, which I'm not a fan of. But it's gotta be done.

When it starts to freeze I use up the last of the water in the barrels, then dump them over.

I then use water from the house.

Yes the water will freeze in the pipe that’s why I use the aquarium pump to keep it circulating

Do you just put the pump into the collection tank or hook it into the pipes?
