If any wild birds have H5N1, it could contaminate your rain barrel.I cut the top of the rain barrel cover, put a mesh cover over top, and then put the lid back on upside down with a hole for the downspout. So it's pretty well protected from stuff getting inside. But my bird droppings reference was more about stuff landing on my metal roof, then being washed off and down into the barrel. It will be dissolved in the rain water, so the mesh won't catch it. Same with dirt/debris. I've noticed that even with the mesh on top, I still get sediment at the bottom of the tank since it sits on the roof/gutter and then washes down into the tank. Not a ton, but noticeable when I empty them out.
