I have a 2 week old chick with momma hen living in hen house with other 2 hens and roo. Momma and baby in an open cage on the floor. Access to large outdoor yard and access to smaller enclosure for chick within big yard. We are having heavy rains today and don't know if I should give momma and chick access to outside. The "bigs" all like to go out and play in the rain. There is a lean-to type shelter in the small chick yard, but rains are so torrential that it will not be dry underneath. The alternative is to keep momma and baby in a cage in the hen house today. I am trying to trust momma to do the correct thing for baby without my interfering. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. Leslie

I would leave them in till chick is feathered out, but that's just me. Trust your instincts and go for it.

JoAnn, whose 4 wk old welsummer chick was too stupid to come in from the rain like all the other birds and had to be rescued from a thunderstorm to the brooder to dry out and warm up.
