I have no idea how well untreated Hemlock would hold up. Cedar holds up very well as does treated timbers.So prolly better off with hemlock then?

That is true!I use treated lumber and railroad ties everywhere and have not seen any evidence of harm.
If you think cedar is expensive, just add up how often you have to replace the non-treated or non cedar wood as it rots away.
