Raising Bantams

I have been raising chickens for years, but I have never thought about raising bantams until now.I recently rescued a bantam roo, and I was interested in getting some bantam hens so that we could hatch some chick's ourselves. I was wondering if there are any tips for anybody new to banties?

There are really not too many differences in regards to actual care of bantams vs. standards. I think the major difference is their size, which affects more than just their sheer size. Their size makes them able to fit through larger spaced fences, make them much better at flying than larger counterparts, and also makes them easier targets for predators, particularly hawks and other raptors. Those are the major points from my point of view. I just love banties. They make great additions to the flock!

Thanks, one other question that I have is has anybody had any problems with the cold? I live in Vermont, so it gets very cold in the winter, and I didn't know if their tiny bodies can stay warm enough.

Wind chills have gotten down to -20 here before. I've never used heat lamps with my birds. The only problem I've had is a little frostbite on my roo's combs and wattles.

I'm with LR on this one. I love my bannies. Just like LF but pint sized lol. I live in NE Ohio and the only problem I've had with the cold weather is frost bite on the tips of combs also. It didn't matter what I tried this year. Either way I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.
