What do I need to know about raising bantams? I have Golden Penciled Hamburgs in with full sized chickens and all is well. But bantams are even smaller. Will they be safe or do I need a separate coop for them? thanks
I had full sized and bantam chicks together in one brooder. The standards were hogging all the food, so I split them into two brooders at one week. At six weeks, though, once they'd all feathered out, I put them all into the coop together and they get along fine. Sometimes the bantams get stepped on, but they can also fly to the higher perches a lot easier so it all works out in the end. Just keep plenty of feeders/waterers to make sure everyone gets a chance to eat and drink.
