last year, we raised our first flock of turkeys. We were very careful to not put them anywhere near the chickens to the blackhead. I am wondering if I’d be able to raise them together realistically. How common is blackhead and is it worth the risk of putting them together? We live un Michigan btw. Th ms for the advice!

Plenty of people raise chickens and turkey together without black head.. including one dear friend of mine.

The toms killed one of her small dogs and a Silkie hen... once all aggressors were removed :)drool) The remaining hens are flock protectors for the chickens.

Keep your stock density reasonable... and worm as needed or know your personal pasture conditions.. would be my suggestion... since it is my understanding that black head is caused by a specific worm. Always learning though! :pop

Good luck! :fl

There is definitely a risk involved, but raising them together can most definitely be done successfully!

I actually have a royal palm turkey hen who sticks with the chickens and even goes into their coop at night to roost with them. They get along fantastically! :)

Last summer we raised nine broad breasted turkeys in the pigpen but it just gets so darn swampy we don’t want to do that again. We are either going to expand the chicken run to be 100‘ x 50’ or simply free range. We live on two acres with lots of predators(raccoons, opossums, and recently lost a hen to a hawk in a covered pen). Is that enough room to free range without them taking over my neighbors property

How did a hawk kill a chicken in a covered pen? Also...do your hen turkeys ever lay eggs?
