Raising chickens for eggs: is it cost effective or not?

My chickens are much more cost effective than my dog is. No eggs at all from that lazy mutt.

I keep telling my wife that she should go into the backyard and collect "Bogart" eggs. (Bogart is our blue heeler) She thinks that is gross.

Oh we'll occassionally buy organic eggs to supplement when they're other too young or old to lay. Regardless, you can buy the bedding and the feed in bulk, which is pretty cost effective and you can feed them all those left over fruit and veggies - they'll love you for it. Cost wise for eggs, its going to be more but the delight of letting them out in the morning and caring for them is well worth it. I'm new to it as well, only had our hens for a few weeks, and it is good fun. We look forward to when they start to lay!

My chickens are still chicks. But for me it is about the experience of my children learning to care for something, and watching the process. And easier composting for garden fertilizer. And being closer to the food source.
