Hey Everyone,

I'm new to all this but I plan on moving to Tuscon Arizona soon and raising some chickens. I have read some of the laws and overall it seems like a more laid back city to do this. However, I'm worried that the owner of the home I rent from will be against this. Does anyone have experience with this? I was thinking of asking before I sign a lease. I'm just wondering if people get away with raising chickens in their backyard while they are renting from someone. I'm trying to get a fair understanding of this so when I move there there are no complications. I would hate to invest all the time and energy to find out what I'm doing is illegal. Thanks in advance!

You absolutely need to talk to the landlord before doing this. Any animal bigger than a goldfish should be on the lease, even if they claim "it's no big deal" get it in writing so it's not an issue later on. I even had pet rats listed on a lease before. Chickens can and will tear up landscaping at the very least.

You also need to make absolutely sure the house you're interested in renting is allowed to have chickens, even if the landlord agrees. My area is fairly lenient with livestock but there's still restrictions based on lot size. Also if the house is in an HOA they may have restrictions the city might not have.
