Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Pics
I've got two OEGB hens that are using the buddy system on a batch of 10-12 eggs as we speak. They're due to hatch out in a week, give or take a couple of days. It'll be interesting to see the little ones react to having two moms. :)

I have a clutch of eggs that have 2 pearl grey guinea hens both sitting on the eggs & a production red chicken sitting on them also. The nest of eggs is so big it takes all 3 of them to cover the eggs..

I never dreamed the chickens would help the guineas out.. lol

My broody chickens are the ones that are hatching all of the guinea eggs at my place :)

I've been trying to get a picture of this, but every time I get close enough for the pic they scatter.. I'll try & get one before they hatch those eggs..

I keep hearing that if you can get a broody hen to hatch guineas for you they'll be more "chicken like" less apt to fight with or pick on the chickens, and friendlier to humans, easier to get back into the roost, etc. Now I'm curious about it. Maybe next year if my guineas start laying I can hatch some under a broody and compare.

Arghhhh! I am so mad at myself!
We just installed our window AC unit so I had the heat lamp more directly over the guinea keets to compensate, but apparently it got too hot and 3 of my 5 died while they slept under the heat! I am so sad and upset that I didn't at least check the temperature when I moved the heat source!!
They could technically move away from it, but if you're asleep, what are you going to do...
:'(((

Argh! I have such bad luck with guineas! When I woke up this morning, the other two had died. I don't understand! I moved the heat lamp further away before going to bed and tested the temperature and it should've been fine!

Are they just super sensitive to heat? I thought since they originated in Africa, they wouldn't be THAT sensitive to heat!

The only other thing I can think of is if maybe they cannot eat cooked white potato.
I had some leftover from my dinner so I mashed it up and gave it to all my chicks. The guineas are the only ones that died.
It is so sad! They were only 4 days old. :((((

Awww I'm sorry you are loosing keats. I don't think the lamo should have been an issue if they were able to move out from under it. Though I don't no how your set up is. Is it solid where the whole thing would have gotten to hot and it not matter if they moved? As far as potatoe I'm not sure on that 1. I never tried giving mine stuff like that. They really don't show much intrest in veggies and stuff.
