Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Pics
So cute. I have my fingers crossed: 14 guinea eggs in the incubator due to hatch at the end of the month.
Anyone have success candling these thick eggs? I haven't tried yet (too early), but I hear it is difficult.

I just wanted to say thank-you for this thread and peoples responses to my question a little while back! :) I originally watched my young guineas wander/sprint off into the woods, unlike the chickens we have who are generally penned but when let out stay in the yard, my heart sunk thinking I had made a HUGE mistake and was teary eyed running through the woods to recapture my little screamers! I was able to capture them and thanks to everyone's advice I was successful in "training" them to their new home! Now I am able to let my little flock of four guineas out into the woods and yard every morning and they come back around mid day for a snack of pellets and bugs, then they return again in the evening when they are called and hop back into the coop with the chickens! The only strange thing I've noticed about them is that they seem rather fond of my roosters and unless I let one of the roosters out with them they pace back and forth along the side of the chicken pen screaming to go back in! It's the strangest thing but hey, they made friends, get along and everyone comes back a couple of times a day so we're all happy here! Thanks again for the great advice!

Ugh. I just candled 41 guinea eggs on day 7 and had 3 blood rings and 13 clears. 25 have a bit of development. I'll leave the clears in another week just in case, but overall bad fertility rate from an otherwise reliable source. I am disappointed.

I had several clears this year as well (mostly the later eggs, the early ones had a high fertility) and my supplier only has two breeding pairs in the pen so I know that the guys were not overworked... I just ordered some more eggs from a member here hoping to get this years hatch closer to what I wanted...

I moved our 2 week old keets to a pin my hubby made. It's like a chicken tractor 4ft wide by 8ft long.
At first they were a little shocked which I don't blame them moving from inside the house to the tractor,
but it gave all 15 of them more room. Plus the tractor is in the corn crib with the chickens. I keep the tractor
doors closed so they get used to each other. They will be able to stay in the tractor about 2 weeks I think then
I can open the doors and let them wander out into the corn crib with the chickens as they wish.
They really tamed down after I moved them I think the swimming pool I had them in was getting a little to small
for them.
Anyway, still have 15 of the 16 keets I ordered and I think that's awesome for my first time out =).

Love reading about all your eggs !

Yes the weather here is very warm staying in the upper 70's to eighties with our horrible humidity.
They have been out there nights now and seem very happy much happier then being in the house.
There is also a shelter inside the tractor I put lots of straw in for them to be on they really seem to love it.

Hi,
I have 3 guinea fowl which I've had since they were keets. Whilst growing they all had white feathers on their chest area. 2 have lost them all quite a while ago. The third one still has a large white patch on its chest. Just wondering what does this mean??

Cheers, Lauren

White chest = Pied color mutation

If the others lost their color as they became adults they were probably one of the other color mutations where the keets have white chest...
