Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Hatched my first Guinea Keet! Now what color is it?
Aww most adorable....looks a little greyish brown with a red beak to me. I know, I know, that's not what you meant, but I had to say it!

Grats on the Guinea! They are so pretty and cute when you, But when they grow up they all look nearly the same in the Prison Orange or Striped jumpsuits depending on where you live...

BTW 8 days until my first ones of the year hatch. I am enrolling them in an early diversion program or maybe a "scared straight" program to try and avert the bad behavior.

No worries, we've got Rahway State Prison (home of Scared Straight) right around the corner!!!

Man, I wish I could enjoy this heat! lol

I love love LOVE vulturine guinea fowl. They are just drop dead gorgeous. Is 100 degree weather really not hot enough for them?

they need humid and hot... they are from sub tropical places. Best if kept in Zoo quality enclosures with formulated food for them. It can be done here but I am not that died in the wool with the husbandry....

They can be hybridized with regular Helmeted Guinea fowl. This gives them the benefits of both worlds... Vigor in many different climates and that blue though its more subdued. Unfortunately so far they have been sterile.

edited to add: the person I spoke to about them was raising them and Cassowaries in Florida... she was breeding Cassowaries for Zoos. Shes also the one who told me about using Catfish chow as a supplement for birds that cant get out to forage for bugs.

Oh my gosh! It never occurred to me that they could be hybridized. That's awesome!

Here's a Google image of the hybrid. Gorgeous!!! I bet you could hybridize vulturine with chickens as well...? Or with Peafowl, now that would be worth seeing!!

Can't happen, As you can see below Guineas and Peafowl are of different families.
Chicken and guineas are same family so they can mate but will produce sterile offspring..

Chickens, Note on chickens you actually have a "sub species" so when a person says their chickens are hybrid, they actually are not, they are crossbred varieties which is way different than hybrid.

Chicken:

Order: Galliformes
Family: Phasianidae
Genus: Gallus
Species: Gallus gallus
Subspecies: Gallus gallus domesticus

Peafowl

Order: Galliformes
Family: Pavoninidae
Genus: Pavo
Species: Pavo antiquus

Guinea:

CLASS: Aves
ORDER: Galliformes
FAMILY: Phasianidae
GENUS SPECIES: Numida

On addendum, the topic is Vulturine Guineas... Order: Galliformes Family: Numididae Genus: Acryllium Species: A. vulturinum But, beyond that never say never about crossbreeds, as human animal classification is not without error nor does mother nature always follow our rules... With that said there have been Guinea/Peafowl crossbreeds successfully created...

I find that highly doubtful, it is more likely a chicken guinea hybrid that looks like a peafowl if you squint than cross.. That is not to say it could not be done in a lab with gene splicing but that is a different thing altogether.

After searching for a credible possibility of this mythical hybrid, I have decided I was correct the first time, it cannot happen and if it did it is a fraud, which means phony taxidermy work or photoshopping.

They are just too distantly related.
