Raising Guinea Fowl 101

OH NO!! Your are forcing you to catch crickets for them? Mine threatened me with bad behavior if I did not catch them fresh crickets, I refused... Which could explain their behavior.

oh yeah, we run around like the chickens, trying to catch all the crickets in a can for those guineas!! I guess we've fallen to the mob!

I read all this stuff suburban Guineas do and I so wish I had them.

My Guineas will come running but at the sound of a switchblade opening or Rap Music coming from an obvious drug dealers car will send then into a glorious tither.

My Guineas will carry around little boom boxes playing said rap music as loud as they can, just to annoy me. They know I am a country music guy.

They never go to bed until it is good and dark. They always elect one of their own to stay out until the last possible second.

I would never try to hold my guineas like those on the swing without wearing a complete set of Hockey protective gear and Kelvar leggings.

Do not get me wrong I love my guineas, I just know they are not all that well behaved. I know they like to roll the homeless and steal cigarettes from the 7-11 in town.

I know when the Deputy show up my Guineas have broke into someone's home somewhere around.

I have realistic expectations for my guineas. They will always be primo tick killers, they will never sing in the church choir.

I have to agree with duluthralphie on this. Our only difference is that we don't have a Deputy showing up, but we have animal control sitting in a van down the street watching them. Kind of like the FBI watching the Mafia. And God forbid they get into the chicken coop, they wreak havoc on the chickens. Our guineas like to roost in the trees right by our bedroom and they seem to also elect one to stay out as well. Our little farm would not be complete without them though!!

Ok. I have 6 wk old guineas and 5 day olds. I read on here to treat them with amprolium but then I read not to feed them medicated chick starter which as far as I understand is just chick feed with amprolium mixed in it. So I bought a 50 lb bag of medicated feed and it specifically says do not use with feeds with bentonite. Bentonite, aka sodium bentonite, is in all the game bird feeds I have seen. It cautions it right on the tag so now I dont know what to do.

Ok. Mine is mfa feed - chick and fryer a crumble - medicated then says, a feed for growing birds. They dont have turkey/game bird starter. I guess I will switch to medicated grower and cut out the game bird feed until they are done with the grower. I was going to do game bird feed with medicated mixed in until I saw the caution on bentonite.
