Raising Guinea Fowl 101

I took pics of the injured leg. It is his left hock joint. I see nothing except maybe the tendon is out.

Bad leg (left, he is upside down too)

Top of bad leg

Good leg

Both legs

I was going to splint the hock joint like this -

I tried to find and re-place tendon and failed because its only easy if you already know whats actually wrong and what you are already doing. Gonna seperate him. Mirror no longer consoles him though. I feel it causes even greater stress but he needs to heal. Any ideas based on pics??

Gosh, it's hard to tell from the pictures. It doesn't really look like splayed leg but you may try splinting its legs together with a band aid or vet wrap. Here are a couple links on leg problems in poultry and how to splint:
(also, if he is really lonely, you might try putting only 1 other keet with him once in a while to keep him company).

Its an injury from the other birds. They are 2.5 weeks old. He is the runt. He was walking fine until he got crushed yesterday by the bigger brothers. I read that whole site but I cant effectively treat what I cant diagnose. Going to have to cull him just because I cant determine the problem. Hopefully he shows signs of improvement by thursday or I will have to end the babies suffering.

i must not have read your post well enough....I'm sorry I didn't understand how he got the injury at first. I wish I had more words of advice, but I don't. You might try posting your situation on the emergencies and injuries forum on here. There are a lot of really knowledgeable people who read and respond. Here is the link to that forum:

I already did. Noone is responding and I am beyond frustrated. Thank you for trying to help.

Unfortunately there arent any aviary vets anywhere near. I know he isnt going to miraculously heal on his own. The vets obviously volunteer to look at him for $25 and then costs of any treatment even though its all guess work for them since they have zero experience.

I just checked on him. I do see that the tendon is not in the groove and yet when I try to put it back I cant get it over the bone. I tried bending and straightening but it wouldn't slide back in place. I am lost as to what else to do. I seperated him and if he isnt better each day I guess I will have to find the strength to cull him.

Next question- how do you humanely "dispatch" of a keet? I cant help but wonder if I am doing everything wrong. My cousin said she never had any problems hatching or raising up keets. I feel I am very hands off. I did take off the screen so they could stretch out their wings and that is when it happened.

I'm so sorry. I wish someone more knowledgeable than myself would respond! I really wish I had more ideas to offer. I had a keet with a splayed leg that didn't make it a few years ago, but it died on its own.....I just couldn't bring myself to cull it. I just don't have the emotional toughness to do it, so I can't really say how to put a little one out of its misery. I've seen recommendations on this site, but I couldn't even hardly read them without feeling sick about it. I really hope your little one starts to improve and you don't have to worry it. Keep us posted on how he does!
I will be praying for your little keet tonight!

Thank you so much for the prayers. Tonight I leave him be to rest. I will continue to pray as well.

I have had those type of injuries on chicks and turkeys before, if they can hobble about I let them live. They never seem to live long, in most cases I just send them to the gas chamber. It seems to be either a knee injury or a congenital problem aggravated by an injury. They are never right and the leg becomes a large club foot/leg.

Good luck with it.

Guineas are the toughest weak birds alive!

I just was throwing out my guinea eggs, I had 5 that did not hatch out of 82.   I heard  a peep. There was one way back in the hatcher. I moved him to the incubator.

I heard another peep.  I candled the bad eggs. One had a living guinea in it!   days after the others hatched..( except the one that was hiding that hatched today sometimes)..........

Amazing..

They needed to vacate the hatcher, I had turkey eggs that need the hatcher now!

YAY!!!

You might try to sling him for a bit to see if that will help him relax enough to slip it back in. Sometimes gravity can be really helpful. At the very least, it will take the pressure off.

I'm so sorry about your keet. I have a feeling that humanely dispatching is the best thing for this one, but I am, by no means an expert. Many sick/ill never to be well again animals in our area are "humanely" shot in the head to take care of them. However, if it were me, I would call your local animal control and see if they can do something for you. Or possibly your local animal shelter too. I know that some shelters will take a dead animal from you to dispose of properly (I'm not sure what that means). We usually bury a dead animal in the yard though. Whatever happens, should your keet survive and grow up lame, please consider the quality of its life while lame.
