Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Anyone's guineas laying eggs for them? Mine are starting to make nests in the coop but no eggs yet...

I'm in northern Wyoming and I have found 4 guinea eggs so far. All but one of them on the ground. Guess they forgot they were supposed to make nests.

Be sure to check out http://www.duckopolis.com/ for many breeds of birds in Canada. The lady who runs the business sells chickens, (including silkies) geese, guinea fowl, ducks and turkeys. I had a lot of trouble finding a breeder in Canada. She ships anywhere in Canada for a flat rate of $20.

I don't have any guinea eggs yet but I find my hens in the nesting areas some through the day rather than out free ranging so I don't think it will be long. This is earlier than the last few years but it's been a pretty warm and mild winter here in SE Iowa.

In Nebraska here, my guineas are laying eggs. We found a couple eggs in a nest last week and the guineas have been paired off and looking for nesting spots for awhile now.

I got eggs at Lake Isabella, CA. I get 4 a day.... I was away and I have about 40 that have been layered in the corner of the coop with straw and shavings almost like someone was preserving them.... I notice 2 hens sitting on them so I left em.

So my question now what will happen? I imagine the eggs will reach a temperature of ???? and start to develop if fertilized????? and then from there I have to wait 21 days???? I haven't a clue...

28 days. I would not count on keets though. It might happen, it might not. Guineas are not exactly model mothers.

I let my guinea hens hatch their own eggs and they do a pretty good job. I find mine to be pretty good mothers. I have two hens that lay and sit on their eggs together and consistently get about 20 keets at each hatch. The only thing I have to be careful of is the weather. My guineas are free range during the day and the hens will take the keets out even if it is raining or the grass is wet, which can be deadly to the very young keets. I just make sure to keep an eye on the weather and just don't let them out of the coop if it's wet or cold outside.

I sure wish my guineas were well behaved and were good mothers. Mine refuse to learn any rules or follow them. They go into a coop, when the mood strikes their fancy. They kill each other for fun.

They are loud and noisy and refuse to stay home..

They will be no more as of May 13th.
