My leg horn chickens will be 16 weeks old next Monday. What are some signs that they will start laying soon? Only 1 of my chickens is starting to get a big red comb. The other ones are growing slowly.

Typically, you'll see bright red, enlarged comb/wattles and they will begin to squat when you approach. 16 weeks is pretty early, even for a Leghorn. Might be closer to 17 - 20 weeks. I think the *squat* is the surest sign that eggs are coming soon! 🥚🥚🥚😉

Keep us updated!!
Thank you for the info!!! We bought laying hens a few years ago, but this is the first time we bought chicks.. excited to find the 1st egg.. hopefully soon 😄

Welcome!
Pictures! Post photos, we love to see chicks! And, could your bird with that big red comb be a cockerel?
Mary
Maybe "big" isn't the right word 🤣 I just ment it's bigger then my other 3 chickens.. which I also thought was interesting since they are all the same age ( almost 16 weeks)

They do have a big run but spend most of their day up in the coop laying down I assume because it's shady and I leave the egg door open to leave air in.. it has a fence over it so nothing can get in.. but that'll have to change once they start laying... I should add the chicken run is shadded by trees so plenty of shade down below.. my other chickens I had 3 years ago was always down below scratching for worms and other good stuff 🤣

None of my chickens squatted before they started laying except one (a silver laced wyandotte.)And she waited least a year to lay.

The others have given excellent advice.

16 weeks is a bit early. Every leghorn I've had over the years (not many, admittedly) has layed at around the same time as my other birds; 5 and a half to 6 months.

Yours look to be weeks away from laying, which isn't a very bad thing
