Raising our 1st set of CX meaties

We're going to go with organic this time around.
Tomorrow morning I should have a delivery of 50 CX. Omg babies! Yay! Lol

Hubby finished the newest brooder today my pics of it are old now that he's made so many changes so ill get more pics tomorrow.

Was waaaay off on the measurenents! Doh. I will edit that shortly.

The 1st brooder was 3 ft across, 3 ft deep and 5 feet long. On wheels and fits through our doorways so I can brig them outdoors (or indoors) without picking up all the chicks. 22 chicks At 3 weeks old (sold batch at 3 weeks that was in this brooder) fit in it still. It did get a lil rough at feeding time until we made a bigger trough.


The 2nd brooder is 3 ft wide, 2 n a half feet high and 6 feet long. Mounted on a cart with wheels - like a home depot flat dolly.
We used a wire bottom this time, added another heat lamp, 2 pulley troughs for feed and are going to put them out in the rabbitry for the 1st 2 weeks.

Round 2!

Hubby went to get the chicks at 5am! Was so funny...I was sound asleep and he brought in the peeping box and I shot outta bed! Lol my eyes couldn't even SEE for a minute, they needed time to awaken

It was like catching Santa in the act!
(note to self: get hubby a Santa hat- hubba Hubba)

So we have 52 (or 53-had a rush of escapees while counting lol but definitely at least 52)
All are alive. 2 looking not so good compared to the others BUT are drinking so maybe just a lil pooped from the ride!
They are drinking. Upon arrival averaged between 1.3 to 1.6 ounces in weight.

Horrible news on my end. The remaining 8 were gone this morning. Predator. Just gone. Most likely coyote, whatever it was had to repeatedly jump in and out of my yard to get all 8. There was a small hug dug out in the corner of the meat coop.

All 53 are doing well. FF batch is bubbly and they are just getting used to it
They are SOOOOO clean. The wire makes a huge difference. I did toss a sheet of newsprint here and there for lil toes to get a rest.

They weigh in between 2 and 2.5 ounces day 2.

Well bullpoo, I lost one this morning. By the looks of it last night. It was flattened
There were 2 runts that I didn't think would make it, so I thought one of them had passed but theyre still alive and kicking and the dead one was of decent size, full crop, nothing leaking from anywhere
We did have a bad cold front come thru and them huddling too close to the light may have caused it.
I lowered the light and am checking temps now. The colds gonna stick around for a week or so, they'll stay downstairs from us where its semi temp controlled.
