I saw a few threads about this, but they were from so long ago, I thought I'd start a new thread.

I live in Las Cruces, and was thinking about getting into raising quail. RIght now I keep a small flock of chickens, and was thinking of branching out. If anyone has any information on breeders anywhere in the area, and would like to talk and offer any advice in general, I'd love to hear from the. Thanks!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Here here....down in the south central mountains of New Mexico!!

What type of quail are you thinking about getting into? Right now all I keep is Bobwhites. I have tried a few other breeds over the years. Lately I am working on expanding my chicken flock and don't do much breeding of quail anymore.

As for breeders in the area, there are none that I know of. I got my start about 10 years ago with a local guy up here in the Hondo Valley that had a huge quail farm with many different types of breeds. He is no longer in business anymore.

Depending on what breed you are looking to raise, your best bet might be to order eggs on line. I purchased lots of Butler Bobwhite eggs from Murray McMurray Hatchery over the years and never had any issues with their breeding lines. James Marie Farms here on BYC raises some really fine Coturnix quail eggs.

Unfortunately there are just not that many of us quail keepers out here!! LOL

Great to have you aboard and enjoy our quail forums!! :)

Hi TwoCrows, What types of permits are required to breed quail in New Mexico, and where would I find more information?
Thanks!

Does anyone have the answer to the permit question? Is a permit required for Quail in NM
I'm sure it depends on the type of quail. Coturnix don't require permits in most states, but you would want to check with your local wildlife/game department and/or your local animal control.
