This reminded me of something that happened many years ago. I rented (sight unseen) a trailor in a different town. it belonged to family. They told me that the renters had skipped out a week or so earlier and they weren't sure what condition it was in, but that it was available. I was desperate, so took it. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon. the first thing I saw was a chicken coop & run. There were chickens in the chicken coop! Apparently the old renters had left them behind.

(at least a week!)

I immediately hollered for my children to find some water and I started digging through the packed boxes for something to feed them. The first thing I found was a box of popcorn. The electricity had already been turned on in the trailor, so I unpacked my microwave and popped popcorn for the chickens. Those were the most grateful chickens I had ever seen!!

It probably wasn't very nutritious... but they were hungry!

I kept those chickens... they were my first ever chickens. I also became a regular at the local feed store. My father-in-law told me months later those were some of the fattest chickens he'd ever seen.

Anyway.. I said all that to say that I don't think a couple days without feed is going to really do permanent harm to the chickens. The chickens will probably really enjoy the free ranging, and the canned fruit, veggies and anything else the poster can find to feed the chickens is definitely better than nothing! I'm not sure how old the OP (babychick) is... sounds like maybe a teenager girl? (could be wrong.) I'm not sure advising her to "walk" to town might be the best advice we can give her. The scrambled eggs was a great suggestion, as was free-ranging her chickens. Bet if she searched her pantry, she'd find lots of things she could feed them

I'm known as the impossible customer. I'm nice and everything, it's just that I do too much research and I always send them searching for something, lol! Just yesterday I called asking if they could get brewers yeast for the ducks! I'll be calling them back tomorrow to see if they found any from their providers and I'll be asking about split peas and kelp granules then! It's rare that I don't sit up at the feed store for an hour or two and just talk. A quick trip doesn't happen with me, lol.

Get on your sneakers or get on the phone. Take a backpack, dump it out and carry feed home that way or.... call and ask for a delvery. Without enough protien the birds will peck each other (and quite possiably eat each other).

A.) I hate the phone, B.) It just doesn't seem right b/c I've only lived in the town for about 2 months... my town only has a population of about 3,500 people...

Town of only 3500, even better! I have found with small towns (from my experience anyway) people are very friendly and helpful. My grandparents live in a small town called Industry and everytime we go to visit everyone we pass waves. My dh is a city boy so he was a little thrown by it at first. No one wants to see someones livestock go without. You would be surprised how friendly people can be given the chance. A lot of feed places deliver, especially in small towns. So I would either call, even if you don't like the phone that is what it is there for or put my running shoes on. 1-3 miles really isn't that far. You probably have a neighbor somewhere before the feed store and they would be willing to help you out for a few days. I know you don't know your neighbors but consider this an oppurtunity to meet them. You have been given a lot of great suggestion. Good Luck
