Random attack -- two lost, one with hole in chest.

Alright. So, something made a swipe AGAIN, and I lost two ducks. I have one duck hen who has a quarter size hole in her chest. She's quacking, walking around the cage I have her in, and drinking. She's traumatized, you can tell. The hole isn't TOO deep, it looks like just the fat tissue got pulled away. There was a little blood, but not a large amount. I cleaned around the wound with peroxide, then bentadine (SP?). She made it through the night. Is there anything else I can do for her besides continue to clean it? She's in a cage on the back porch, away from everyone else in a relatively quiet area.

I have no idea what attacked, I lost turkeys about a month ago.

Anything else I can do to prevent infection and keep her going? Vet is out of the question, no funds for that.

The peroxide is good for preventing infection. However, if you can get something called Fura-zone, that would really help the wound heal.

Fura-zone can be purchased at most feed stores including tractor supply. It costs about $9 and it is great to have on hand for emergencies. It comes in a black container and the ointment is bright yellow. This will keep the flies off her, prevent infection, and help to heal. If you can get this, just glob it on for a few days until the wound begins to heal.

If your duck seems to be in pain, you could dissolve one or two plain aspirin in a gallon of water. Those gallon milk jugs work great and you can keep the extra in the refrigerator. She will drink what she needs and it is extremely difficult to overdose with such a mild amount in the water. Give her that when she seems in pain.
