Ok so I had 5 Silkie babies and 1 polish it was all going ok until I checked on them and found one DEAD under the brooder plate the others are fine but what do you think caused it?

I'm sorry for your loss.
How old are your chicks?

Unfortunately, there is no way to know what caused your chick's death without testing/necropsy.

All you can do is see that everyone is eating/drinking well and active. Have one warm spot in the brooder, let the rest be cool and watch for any signs of illness - lethargy, isolating themselves, not eating/drinking, bloody stools, etc.

Also--- have you checked for pasty-butt? That can sneak up on them too. If you still have the deceased chick, do check and see if it's little vent was clear. You should be able to see pink tissue- if there's any kind of debris stuck to the vent, that is one of those things that can turn into a fatality.

Be sure to check the rest of their butts (always good practice for the first 2 weeks) and make sure you can clearly see the vent clean and clear. Note that they may have a little bit of a navel left - don't pull on that!! Here's an article about it just in case- one of the pictures shows the location of the navel/belly button in relation to the vent.
