Hi for some reason had a random question about ducks and wondering if anyone knows the anser:

Do ducks stay in one place

like if i owned a lagre forested/farmland with pond if ducks had pond area they can live will they stay/breed etc there or will they just bolt the second winter comes and not return etc (partly thinking for "wild" raising ducks eg no cages natural nests etc)

You would want to give them a coop to be safe at night and maybe fence them in temporarily for a bit. Once you did that as long as they have food and a pond they'll be pretty happy and likely won't run off - unless they're like wood ducks or something that can fly.

cool right now just idea that poped into head as i live by park with ducks and magicly there gone by winter but back summer and didnt know if ducks just goto whereever they want or if they keep to one area once settled

Ducks are migratory in general. Domestic ducks generally don't fly aside from select breeds.
That doesn't mean they'll stick to the pond if you don't give them a reason to call it home and shelter/food so they don't have to go looking.

If you had ducklings, you could imprint on them, which basically makes them think you are their parent, and they will be comfortable around you. By doing this, and giving shelter and food they would be likely to stay. There is a YouTube channel called Gold Shaw Farm who has the same situation as you described, so maybe look into that?

Most of the people here that have ducks have domestic ones that will not fly away. There are certain breeds, muscovy, calls, and mallards that can fly but most of the ones we talk about on BYC do not. Wings can be clipped so they can't take off too. Pekins, KC, Runners, Swedish, Welsh, Saxony, and a bunch more most likely will not fly away.
