Rant about people stereotyping all roosters as mean!

Having dealt with about a dozen grown roos in the last couple of years I can say that only one was evil. He is no longer with us. My flock roosters are gentle and great protectors of the girls.

Out of the 300 plus chickens and many breeds I've had over the years, at one time or another, very very very few were ever mean. I had a pen just full of adult roosters, that I would place any young roo that showed signs of starting to become to big for his britches..... they straightened him out usually. Most of mine are very friendly, very curious and very loving. A good roo is worth a lot around here.

I have had lots of roosters over the last 2 years. Right now I have 4. The boys are, my main rooster Penguin he is a Barred Rock. The most sweetest rooster good with us and the girls. Einstein a Polish rooster, he is just silly. Hop Sing my bantam Cochin rooster and Blue my silkie rooster. I just rehomed Penguin's son. The only one I have had that was a little agressive was a BSL named Lindy. He wasnt mean to us but was rough with the girls. I rehomed Prince that was a Delaware roo.but wished I would have kept him. He was a big beautiful boy. I also just rehomed a baby roo that is a D'anvers cochin mix. He is the most friendly sweet boy. He would fly up on my shoulder and cuddle my neck when I would go in to take care of them. The lady that took him I told her she has to cuddle with him everyday

She called me 2 days later and said he is so sweet she just loves him. I couldnt imagine have a flock of chickens without having a rooster or two.

I fail to see the need for all the drama.

You want to butcher one of YOUR roosters, why let your mother's friends rain on your parade.

The means ones get eaten at my house and unfortunately so do some nice ones just for being extras. I raise chickens for eggs n meat so my layer flock is a mix of dual purpose birds with some banties that are pets. (some of my big girls are pets too!)

I just processed Soon To Be who was a nice rooster. He processed out very nice, lots of meat on him.

I have 1 Wheaten Ameraucana named Cotton in the breed pen that is nice but shy. I can handle him easily as he has never shown any aggression at all.

Lester is the main rooster in my layer flock. He is a Blue/Black Wyandotte with some gold leakage in his neck feathers. All the hens love Lester as he is awesome with them. He does not like to be touched by us and very rarely raises his hackles (every so often he gets a wild feather up his butt and acts like he wants to go only to shy back down, he learned early that messing with the big folks = too much trouble for him). He respects his place and does quite well.

Cinnimon is the 2nd in command in the layer flock. He is a Patridge Silkie and lets me cuddle him. In fact, Cinnimon is known to pout if he does not receive his cuddles. He now has his own group of girls that follow him everywhere and has become a flock within the main flock so to speak.

Peaches is a buff silkie mix of some sort that is a scrappy little fellow. He is currently obsessed with taking on Cotton through the fence of the breed pen. Peaches always gets the worst of the sparing so it is a good thing Cotton can't get out. Peaches when worked up will make a go at me but I just pick him up n cuddle him and he melts, then he wants on my should for better view of the yard. He will come up to be picked up as well. Peaches was supposed to be at a new home with some girls of his own however, my friend has not shown true interest in getting him and the girls I told her she could have. He may end up here through his whole life as I really do love the scrappy lil fella.

I am not zoned for roosters, which makes it very hard to rehome the roosters which I raised. Not a mean one in the bunch, and they will not be used for food. Pretty fortunate to rehome them with a friend whom has the room and blessings from the county in zoning laws. They are all fantastic leaders of the flock, watchful, protective gentlemen whom won't even go for the treats until the ladies do first. I am amazed at how their instints put them at specific points watching outward as the girls go to the coop at night. Humans seem to over-do, need diagrams and timelines and emails for support and reminders as to who's time to stand guard. One rooster even sleeps closest to the door in their roosting area. They are unruffled when the hens go through their social antics, but still stand watch. I would LOVE to live somewhere where I can keep roosters with the flock.

Haha I have the perfect roo to help you.
His name is Mr. Grumbles.
He was abandoned.
He comes when i call him.
He dances at the front of his crate, and he loves to be baby coddled upside down.
How is that a nasty rooster?

we had roos at one time, while amulet and pepper were still babies, we got four hens, but two of those 'hens' turned out to be roos. We didn't get baby chicks, but they were the sweetest birds, pretty too. they would chase you around the yard, they were sweet. We had to sell them, though, when amulet and pepper turned into adolescents, and were getting ready to lay.

Hi everyone!

Below is a copy of a post I made a short time after I came home from the hospital after suffering a deadly Anaphlaxis attack while doing my morning " chicken chores "!

I needed a tracheotomy to breath.

This story has the best outcome thanks to my BC Polish Roo !

A true Thanksgiving story in mine and my kid's lives.

DD

5 am Friday morning, I woke up after falling asleep on my recliner.

I had a Slight itch on my right leg.

I have Never been allergic to Anything !

I went out to the coops to perform my morning rituals of saying " Good Morning " to the Girls and my Salmon Favorelle and Black Crested

Polish Roos.

Suddenly , my ears, hair , eyes AND tongue, started burning and swelling up to where my eyes closed !

My Airway started closing off and I knew I was in Severe trouble !

Things started to go " black " . Phillip is my Polish Roo. ( he is in my Avatar ).

I took a breath and Down I went !

I was on my left side barely to move or scream for help.

Phil doesn't crow Alot , but I heard him run Out of the coop , crowing ALOT !

My son told me later that he heard Phil crowing more than usual , then as my son came downstairs , he was surprised to see Phil On the porch pecking on the sliding glass patio door!

He had Flown over a short part of their fence and went onto the patio. !

He came back in and stood by my head .

The girls were slightly pecking me, curious I guess .

Funny thing is , he then " chased " the girls up into their " bedrooms".

Now DH had already left for work and my 16 yr old and 14 yr old , sons were in the house still asleep.

Not knowing how long I was unconscious , next thing I remember is my 14 yr old shaking me.

I told him HE was going to have to drive me to the hospital because we live too far out in the boonies and I didn't have time to wait for an ambulance , plus, we had just had a large snowstorm and my Private road had not been plowed yet.

Another reason He had to drive , is that my 16 is handicapped.

I was Unconscious when we arrived.

I came to on the gurney and people stripping off my clothes and doctors barking orders !

I heard the dr say that a breathing tube would Not be able to go down my throat due to the swelling!!!

After getting shots and monitors put on me, the nurse brought in the tray used in doing Tracheotomys !

I really didn't feel them cutting the hole in my throat, but I remember suddenly being able to breathe !

Now I know how it feels to be slowly strangled and it's horrifying!

I'm home now but have to carry an Epi pen always since I have NO idea what bit me!
