Rant about people stereotyping all roosters as mean!

Yeah I wouldn’t say that all roos are mean, in fact I have a very nice roo right now. But I have run in to quite a few roos that have “gone bad” as my dad calls it. I understand that they are just doing what their instincts tell them they need to do to protect their status as head roo or to protect the hens but that doesn’t mean I have to deal with them when those instincts kick in. Even roos that aren’t being mean to me per say but are to rough on my ladies go, they don’t need the stress and neither do I.

Currently I have 12 roosters with one being downright NASTY! He even bit my face and drew blood (he's a Silkie). He is just terribly ill tempered, even to the hens he was with. The other 11 are very nice. I do have one who I don't turn my back on but he is fine to pick up. I enjoy my roosters immensely, I love hearing their different sounds for certain events (like tidbitting). My roosty's breeds consist of Production Red, EE and Silkie. So no, there not all mean.

This is my baby boy, Buff Puff (we call him BP). I raised him in my pocket when his mom abandoned him as an egg. He's my best buddy. He brings me all the best treats first

and its not uncommon to find him watching television on the back of the couch, or in my daughters play room having a spot of tea (she still hasn't figured out how to get his bonnet to stay on, poor guy

). Anyway, he's an absolute lovebug. Me with my boy:

BP with my brothers lady friend, he loves to be fussed over!

Funny story: my brothers girlfriends mom used to be afraid of my chickens. They came over one day, and we were standing outside talking. She looked down, and there was BP. Well, being afraid of chickens, she took off like someone shot her in the butt. Since BP loves people, he took off after her. It was a good 25 minutes before we could convince her he just wanted to be held. She faced her fear, picked him up and fell in love. He's the reason she has chickens of her own

ladychicken&Ducklover :

Hi everyone!

Below is a copy of a post I made a short time after I came home from the hospital after suffering a deadly Anaphlaxis attack while doing my morning " chicken chores "!

I needed a tracheotomy to breath.

This story has the best outcome thanks to my BC Polish Roo !

A true Thanksgiving story in mine and my kid's lives.

DD

5 am Friday morning, I woke up after falling asleep on my recliner.

I had a Slight itch on my right leg.

I have Never been allergic to Anything !

I have no idea why it didn't put the post on here, but what I meant to say is what a good boy! People just dont give animals enough credit

Awww what a neat story! People just don't give animals enough credit! such a good boy to save his "Momma"!

I went out to the coops to perform my morning rituals of saying " Good Morning " to the Girls and my Salmon Favorelle and Black Crested

Polish Roos.

Suddenly , my ears, hair , eyes AND tongue, started burning and swelling up to where my eyes closed !

My Airway started closing off and I knew I was in Severe trouble !

Things started to go " black " . Phillip is my Polish Roo. ( he is in my Avatar ).

I took a breath and Down I went !

I was on my left side barely to move or scream for help.

Phil doesn't crow Alot , but I heard him run Out of the coop , crowing ALOT !

My son told me later that he heard Phil crowing more than usual , then as my son came downstairs , he was surprised to see Phil On the porch pecking on the sliding glass patio door!

He had Flown over a short part of their fence and went onto the patio. !

He came back in and stood by my head .

The girls were slightly pecking me, curious I guess .

Funny thing is , he then " chased " the girls up into their " bedrooms".

Now DH had already left for work and my 16 yr old and 14 yr old , sons were in the house still asleep.

Not knowing how long I was unconscious , next thing I remember is my 14 yr old shaking me.

I told him HE was going to have to drive me to the hospital because we live too far out in the boonies and I didn't have time to wait for an ambulance , plus, we had just had a large snowstorm and my Private road had not been plowed yet.

Another reason He had to drive , is that my 16 is handicapped.

I was Unconscious when we arrived.

I came to on the gurney and people stripping off my clothes and doctors barking orders !

I heard the dr say that a breathing tube would Not be able to go down my throat due to the swelling!!!

After getting shots and monitors put on me, the nurse brought in the tray used in doing Tracheotomys !

I really didn't feel them cutting the hole in my throat, but I remember suddenly being able to breathe !

Now I know how it feels to be slowly strangled and it's horrifying!

I'm home now but have to carry an Epi pen always since I have NO idea what bit me!

I have no idea why it didn't put the post on here, but what I meant to say is what a good boy! People just dont give animals enough credit
and your little guy just proves it!!! Such a good boy and it proves he loves you too!
