Rant....Shipping prices

I've been checking out the BSA thread, what's going on with the shipping price, are we getting lazy. $10 shipping is fair, but $15 or more for 6 eggs. I mean I've shipped to TN for $4.95 and all I had to do was get off my butt and go to the PO. The PO will give you boxes for free, news paper or plastic grocery bag free for the recycling. if you use bubble wrap, its not that expensive. Flat rate is $14.95 why should the buyer of your eggs pay because you don't want to go to the PO. When the shipping is higher than the eggs I don't buy, but really. I understand some of us can't get to the PO......BUT

If I've upset someone Sorry. Its just madding to want someone's eggs then you see the shipping price......I've shipped so know what it costs

I dont mind paying a little extra for shipping especially when so many nice people on here are sending me free eggs to hatch!

What I dont like is the high end egg prices.. I dont show! I just want variety in my backyard! Not out for fame or fortune just wanna have some pretty birds to look at and enjoy!

I agree. The cost of shipping has changed my mind several times. I too have shipped and know what the cost should be. Have you shopped E bay recently? Some sellers on there have gotten bad too. Then you receive the package and the shipping isn't even close to what you were charged.

A couple of things to think about.
1. The P.O will deliver "free" boxes to your door. You can order them on line.
2. That shipping cost may include, delivery confirmaton, which is good for the seller when the buyer might say, "Oh the eggs never came".
3. Some shipping is based on where the item is going.
4. Flat rate shipping while convenient may not be the cheapest way to send something. I recently showed two ladies in the P.O. that they could ship their bathrobe priority but didn't need to use "flat rate".
5. If you have an "Automated Postal Center" near you, you can check the difference before you send.
6. Income from selling eggs is just that income and must be reported to the IRS. Something I just realized for myself. While I donate the money to charity I still have to report it. I have to check. Point being perhaps the seller is reporting honestly and needs the ease of fileing expenses. Shipping flat rate makes it easy to keep records I suppose.
7. If I want the eggs badly enough, it's not that big o' deal.

I hope something I said makes the OP feel better, cuz that's my only motive.

If you sell on eggbid or ebay, you have their fees plus paypals fee, usually about $2. 70 bubble wrap $1 then you have tape to tape up the box. I usually send more then 12 eggs shipping for me is usually around $8 to $12, But I had one that cost $16 just to ship. So I dont' think $15 for a dozen is bad, by the time you ad up all the cost, and gas to post office, you arne't really making anything on shipping. But I agree some people are charging way to much. $15-$16 for 6 eggs is unreasonable.

I send most orders is a flat rate medium size box, which with delivery confirmation is around $12. $15 for large. I use the smallest box I can put those eggs into. I think the small boxes don't provide enough protection,but if someoe wanted me to use one I would do whatever they wanted. There is just more cushioning in a larger box, plus I can cram in more extras. I can manage to sqeeze two dozen in a medium flat rate box the way I ship. No room for extras and freebies in those little boxes!

If you buy your postage online at www.usps.com they include delivery confirmation for free AND they usually discount it a little bit AND you don't have to leave the house. You're limited to purchasing Priority or Express mail, but you're NOT limited to flat rate boxes, so you can pay the regular priority rate which is usually much cheaper than flat rate.

a flate rate med box is smaller than a med priority box, and the priority box is less to send, unless you fill it with pines shavings

I don't use the flat rate boxes. I averaged what I was paying for shipping at one point last year.....I was averaging almost $13 per box of eggs for priority shipping with delivery confirmation, anywhere from 14-18 eggs per box. That was not counting anything for my packing materials, paypal fees, etc.
