Ranting about horrible mix breeding between all animals no matter what the animal is

dHere’s a thread we can rant about shelter dogs and actual great bred dogs by experienced people and why we prefer to buy from thos people and not shelter dogs @DLHOCNT can post photos of what you hate and love about dogs that are mix bred or just purebred I love purebred over mixing breeds
In my opinion pugs are awful, they are just bred to have squished deformed faces they cant breath right and its just a big yikes in my opinion.

shelter dogs are good though purebreds are pretty shit sometimes with health issues and shorter lifespans

"Adopt, don't shop''
Adopt- Yes! Great! I fully support the adoption of dogs (pets in general, but this thread is about dogs) as long as you're aware what you're getting into with potential behavioral and health problems. I also think that adopting counts as this scenario: Your friend's dog accidentally got pregnant and they now have a litter of mixed puppies. You're adopting one because they can't care for all of the dogs. the important part: They're not charging you for this puppy, in fact, you're doing THEM a favor.

'Don't shop'- When I say don't shop, I mean don't shop pet stores, puppy mills, or backyard breeders. I see no issue with buying a puppy from a reputable, responsible breeder that is working toward bettering their chosen breed.

As for 'horrible mixed breeding' there are some things that I really don't think should purposely be mixed by humans (Extreme example being great dane and chihuahua) but for things like labradoodles, if they're being responsibly bred (responsibly= health testing on all dogs used to breed, not breeding dogs with physical deformities or unstable temperaments, not overbreeding (basically how @CharcoalDragon defined a responsible breeder)) I see no issue with it.

As for pure breeds like pugs who have horrible issues- I don't agree with breeding those breeds (breeds that have extreme health issues coming from this like pugs, GSDs, cavalier king charles spaniels, etc etc) toward AKC standard, because I think that the AKC standard is absolutely abhorrent and they need to take a good, hard look on what they're doing to dogs and reevaluate their decisions. However, this doesn't mean that I'm against responsible breeding of these dogs (example: working line GSDs that aren't bred for show)
.

i think some people might be misinterpreting the point. I’m saying that shelter dogs aren’t “less than” a breeder dog. no hate to breeders, but i don’t meet a lot of people who are super concerned with how pure bred there dog is. we shouldn’t be thinking of breeders as regular stores and shelters as thrift stores. it’s easy to make the comparison but it’s not true. nobody is really making an attack on breeders as a whole, just that unless you’re super concerned about how pure bred your dog is go to a shelter first. just because some have behavioral issues doesn’t mean all. i’ve never had a dog from a breeder and i’ve also never had an aggressive dog, and most of the animals we saw when we were looking at different shelters weren’t that aggressive anyways, just behavioral problems like jumping. if you don’t want a shelter dog, don’t get a shelter dog. but don’t think of shelter dogs as anything less than animals that deserve respect and love.

I'd be so much more likely to agree with the behavioral issue argument if (as I said in a previous post) the AKC didn't have hundreds of different breed rescues with thousands of pure bred dogs in them. If pure bred dogs don't have as many issues, why are there so many in breed specific rescues?

Another thing to keep in mind is that shelters are not completely perfect institutions that a lot of people make them out to be.

Particularly no-kill shelters, as they will either adopt out whatever comes through their doors, or transfer those same dogs to a kill shelter in order to market themselves as 'no kill'.
Because there is such a cultural push around "Adopt Don't Shop" and "Save Every Life", shelters that have to put animals down for one reason or another, end up having to close. (Think protests, think bad press.) Which only puts pressure on the surrounding shelters and puts a lot of animals that are completely adoptable in dire straits.

Most shelters will not attempt to match a dog to the family, which can end up a disaster. We got my current dog from a shelter, $900USD or walk. No option to foster, just two sentences about how she's a working breed mix and will be a handful. And let me say, she is a handful- GSD, Husky & Malamute, so she needs a job, but her job is definitely not to listen to a handler. There's very little GSD expression there. Plus she came with reactivity, food aggression, resource guarding, and object & noise phobias. We can only assume she was dumped at the shelter because of this (yes, the staff said she was literally tossed over the fence).
We worked hard on her, and she's loads better, and has four titles to prove it.

However, from the amount of training and work that I witness the average dog owner to put into their dog- good chance she would have been surrended again. Most people aren't willing to deal with minor behavior issues like pulling or jumping; so separation anxiety, aggression, or excessive fear? Forget about it.

Those who put in that rehab time, truly deserve dogs.

What shelters need to be, are rehabilitation centers- where trained behavior consultants can work with the dogs, rather than just trying to get dogs out the door.
