Poor pup. We have a similar situation with owning a biggish piece of forested mountain, and our two hounds will range many miles if allowed to. Everyone here has guns, so they are not allowed to roam. We fenced a small area out back and put in a dog door so they can go outside at will, but they do not run free. It sounds like you may have to change what Porky is allowed to do.

Porky recently ran away and hasn't been back since the day before yesterday. likely pouting about having to wear a harness and a cone.

we have a smaller fence up, but he digs underneath and escapes

Put an electric fence just inside the existing fence, about a foot away from the existing fence and about 8" above the ground. I like to put Christmas lights along it. Then if the electric fence ever goes off for any reason, the dog will still stay clear of it because the lights are a reminder.

I'm sorry to hear he's missing, hopefully he'll come home soon.

Porky came back today. his cone and harness was off and is likely in the forest.. i'm not going to be looking for it

But, surprisingly his wound is doing better. I'm going to keep watching for infection, and try to build him a secure fence that he cant escape.
