Do you know what a true pit bull terrier looks like? In MY 21 years, I have been bitten by a husky mix, an elkhound, several lhasa apsos, a bichonpoo, several shih tzus, and a few chihuahuas. The only reason most people see "pit bull" bites is because there are about 3 times more pit bulls in the US than any other dog breed! But in relation to their numbers, pit bulls actually have a lower bite ratio than others such as shepherds and rotties, Also, emts and police should really learn dog body language and behavior. Then you will realize what dogs are not a threat. I would bet my life that most of the dogs you had tazed or pepper sprayed would have been no threat to you if you had just walked right in and ignored it.I have never once in my 13 years in EMS seen a dog bite from a lab or Golden. I have lost count of the bites I have seen with pits. I have lost count on the number of pits I have had to have LEOs taze or pepper spray so I could go in an help the owner. And a pit was the only dog I have ever had to pull off of a 7 year old girl an shoot.
There are more dangerous dogs out there. But at least with those breeds the owners know it. With pits they always say they are harmless. always...
Quote: Nope, I cant tell many mixes an similar breeds from a pure breed. What I do know is there are very few of those other breeds up here. There are a lot of pure breed dogs around that people are very proud of.
People make it a point to show you the papers on there dog after you shoot it.
I have worked with dogs for years an can read body language just fine but if you call 911 an when I show up a dog big enough to hurt me comes at me an any manner I see as a danger, one of 2 things are going to happen. If I can get back to my truck I am leaving an you get to die or if I cant then I am shooting the dog. It is not my place to deal with a bad trained dog. I dont have time to sit there an read body language. Time is not the friend of EMS.
There are more hunting breeds up here than pits by the way an pits are still the number 1 biters that require EMS anyway.
Compared to the numbers of them that are around, a chow chow is the worst biter but very few people own them an the ones that do know the danger.
Again, its not the breed, its the lie that is commonly spread that "they are a safe breed as long as you are not mean to them."
I agree! There needs to be discipline and control!
