raraku

My Ponapes came indirectly from Yasher who, according to my most recent information, has given up his birds and sold them to someone my partner has been in contact with (I don't recall his name.). But I don't believe the Rarakus came from his lines.

Did Yashar say that Rarakus are sterile? If he did, it contradicts previous statements from him and many others.

No offense Sourland, but I hope you're wrong. The Raraku has elements that are vital to my breeding program as well as my partner's. We've been studying these birds and trying to get our hands on some for a very long time and this is the first time anyone has mentioned anything about fertility problems. I hope my partner didn't just waste a whole lot of money.

My question would be: How did they develop into a unique, identifiable, feral breed if they are sterile and therefore must come from two genetically distant parents. These parent species would always have had to be present on the island and would choose to mate, not with their own species, but another species. I'm also not aware of any pure Green or Ceylon Jungle Fowl ever living on any of these islands. Without fertility, or ever present parents of different species who are in to beastiality, they would have died out in a generation. They are descended from Bekisars, but they are not Bekikos. They are many generations out from Bekisars, and even F2 Bekiko cocks are almost always fertile.

Sorry. I'm just trying to talk myself though this potentially awful news. Any more information would be vital. Hopefully it doesn't ruin my day.

Thanks.

Hey Sourland. Have you had experiences with them or an information source with which I'm unfamiliar? The reports I've gathered from people who have them, claim they are fully fertile. They are very similar genetically to Saudeleur Ponape, which I know for a fact are fully fertile because I have them. Any information you can link to me or that you've experienced or heard would be valuable. I'm not interested in having sterile birds.
You just have to post is some pics of your birds!
I can't wait! I'm sure the are absolutely beautiful! :celebrate:wee:ya:highfive::yesss::thumbsup

I'm a very low tech guy. I don't even have a cell phone or a camera. When my wife's home, I'll try to get a picture of my nicest Saudeleur Ponope cock. And if my kids can teach me how to post here, you'll be seeing a beautiful bird, but it probably won't be soon.

I just discovered through 1cock2hens that I may have been quite gullible. I thought that sourland was referring to your posts regarding Bekisars and not the other posts; especially after, he referenced Yaser and his birds. I am aware that the Rapanui Statues haven't produced fertile offspring in at least hundreds of years.

I'm just a little over sensitive to warnings about fertility because it can be a big problem when dealing with very crazy breeds and hybrids. You guys originally thought I was joking, but the joke's on me.

I admit, it sounded like a snipe hunting tale or going cow tipping to begin with. :gig
My Grandpa used to scare us into being home before dark, after running around in the woods all day when we were little. He made a Dumb Bull and would go out in the woods and pull on it after dark. He told us it was a Wambat that broke loose. It still makes my skin crawl just thinking about that noise.
To make a Dumb Bull, soak a hunk of raw hide leather big enough to cover the top of a wooden nail keg (hard to find now). After soaking the leather, stretch it tight and mail it down across the top of the keg, essentially making a small drum. Poke a small hole in the middle of the drum head with a nail and fish a piece of rosin cord or a big fiddle string thru the hole. Tie a knot on each end so you don't pull the rosin cord slam outta the dumb bull.
Put the Dumb bull between your legs and give the cord a pull. Depending on how fast you pull it, it can sound like a bear, a mountain lion, or big bobcat!
We had never seen a wombat, but when he would pull the cord on that Dumb Bull, we heard (or thought we heard) some beast growling that came out after dark and eat kids. We would always high tail it home where he knew it was safe. :lau

You're right sourland. After I wrote the above post, I started questioning the possibility of inbreeding depression, rather than outbreeding depression. If the Raraku does have problems with inbreeding depression decreasing fertility, I expect that I'll be able to outbreed to similar birds, such as the Ponape and retain the characteristics I'm after. If it's truly an outbreeding depression, I'm screwed, because if males are infertile, females have no chance of being fertile. Luckily, virtually all male hybrids between Jungle Fowl are at least partially fertile, so if I have low fertility, I can still manage it.
