Hi all,

I'd love it if you'd play "what's my breed?" with me. We received 27 chicks from McMurray, these are the 20 survivors. I tried to get good pics that would show their wings and legs as well. Thanks!

more to come

1. White crested black or blue Polish and ?? (too hard to tell the color)
2. Brahma or Cochin
3. Cochin
4. Hard to tell from the pic but could be any number of breeds.
The lighting for your pictures should be as natural as possible to best show the colors. It's not going to hurt the chicks to come out from under the heat lamp for a couple of minutes. It's also good to get pics of the birds standing since the carriage can be an indicator of the breed, straight level side shots are best for this. Straight head-on shots showing the comb also help, this type of pic will also help show if the bird is bearded or not.

you're right about the lighting. Unfortunately, the basement lighting isn't great. I'll get better pics outside when it's a bit warmer. Thanks for the help!

11 and 12 are more Polish (one white crested and one golden)
All of your feather legged birds are most likely Cochins and Brahmas if they are large fowl. You can tell the difference between them by the comb. Cochins will have single combs that have a single serrated edge sticking straight up while Brahmas will have a pea comb that will show as rather flat or have three rows of bumps. Cochins typically have heavier leg feathering as well.
15 looks like it might be an Easter Egger.

I'm no expert by any means but I got my chicks from McMurray as well so I'm basing my guess on what my chicks looked like. #2 Light Brahma, #3 Partridge Cochin, #4 Araucana (they don't sell easter eggers), #10 Partridge Cochin, #12 Light Brahma, #14 White Cochin and #15 Araucana. I could easily tell which one of my chicks were Araucana's by the puffer feathers on their cheeks. Good luck.

True Araucanas are rumpless, tufted, come in specific colors, and are very rare. I have yet to see a hatchery carry a true Araucana but hatcheries do frequently advertize birds as Ameraucana or Araucana when the are in fact Easter Eggers - birds that lay colored eggs but have no breed standard so can come in any color and may or may not have beard/muffs. True Araucanas and Ameraucanas can normally only be found in a breeder's coop.

#11 - Is Polish, no doubt about it. I'm guessing a blue or black with white top, although I lean towards the blue.
#12 - Is possibly a Polish, I can't see the chicks head very good but if it does have a poof like number 11, it's a polish. Not sure on color, to hard to see.
