"Rare" chickens?

LOL.....I do believe you are right. I suppose the good thing is I will lose all my family and friends when they tire of hearing "OMG....did you know that "................" (some new chicken info I learned on here) and will have all the time in the world to dedicate to chickens!!!!!

I should be glad that I found this thread late, because once I get started on the hatcheries selling thousands of their "rare" mutts I can't get stopped. Chris is about as right as right can be. The hatcheries often sell lines that have been outcrossed as rare birds and then people on ebay sell the hatchery birds' eggs as "rare"and "endangered." It's pretty funny

REAL heritage birds of certain breeds: Dominique, Java, Delaware, Buckeye, etc. are really, really, really, hard to find (just try it some time and see). But sure, you can buy a ton of birds with these names and basic pattern from any hatchery you want. Some are perfectly nice birds, maybe even with fewer genetic issues than the real thing. Of course, some have poor qualities that the real thing wouldn't have, too... But that's a whole other post. I'd ask people who are really interested in breed preservation to buy from a breeder rather than a hatchery. That's all. :|

about Hatchery Birds.

This is true. I have a specimen, "Fun Flock" of hatchery birds and they are hardy, good natured & good layers: a Lt Brahma; Buff Orp; Austrlorp; Barred Rock; 3 Easter Eggers (these are just mutts but I love 'em). I KNOW they are not high quality as in a "show bird" or "rare." The Brahma, Orp, Austrlorp & Rock do look like they are supposed to look like as in color & pattern and I enjoy them.

Just know what you've got and enjoy them.

What I love is when feed store employees list what they think the breeds in the buckets are... And they're all spelled wrong, or not even in there.

But people come in expecting to get Aracaunas cuz the bucket says so, and then none of their hens lay blue eggs...

Honestly, I don't care what mine are, though I like knowing what color eggs they should lay for a pretty variety.

I love looking in my egg carton and thinking hmmmm.....I think I will take one of each color for the cake. LOL But yeah, no matter what my chickens are or are supposed to be, they are loved, spoiled, 100% cherished.

I feel the same way. It is hard for me to pick a breed, I finally decided on the Dominiques because I love the barring and their combs. I don't care if they are "perfect" either. In the future, I am still going to try to breed them to increase my flock.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that wants a pair of each breed

. I just found out, in January, that you could order chicks through the mail. That was it, I ordered my chicks and now I am addicted
