rash around eyes

My friend is having a problem with one of her Faverolles. She is listless and has a rash around her eyes. Today she says her eyes are closed with rash. Does anybody have any ideas?

Have her gently wash the eye area with warm water and see what it looks like after.

what color is the rash? how long has it been there? How old is the chicken? Has she used anything on it yet? can you get pic's?

Neither of us has a digital camera so can't show picture.. I think rash started yesterday on five month old faverolle pullet..now rooster in same pen is showing signs of same thing. She called feed store and they told her it was coccidiosis, and told her to open the eye and rub terramycin in it and give her some. I thought coccidiosis was an intestinal parasite that caused diarrhea.

You can put terramycin eye ointment on the eye if you need to. Not the powder or liquid antibiotic.

I think mites or lice is more likely.

After doing a little more research, I'm inclined to believe it's mites also. I told her to sprinkle Sevin 5% all around in her pens and especially in their dusting holes. The ointment will still help around the eyes, so hope everything together will fix her problem. She's as nuts about her chickens as a lot of us are.

Can you describe this rash? Color? Could be a form of fowl pox and not a rash. If two birds have the same exact rash, I would tend to think it was more this than mites.

The best I can remember it is a fine red rash around the eyes and maybe on the comb. Now that she is putting the ointment on it she says the bumps are turning black. I guess they are drying up. She is also putting some kind of medicine in their water.
