So today when i went outside to change their water and i heard a barky rough noise i thought it was a cough and it kept happening, i found the hen i haven't seperated her from the flock yet or should I? It sounds very deep and rough. I can only describe it like someone with a barky cough breathing. I don't know what it is. I think it might have to deal with the ventalation out there. My dad won't install anymore for them out there he always says they have enough but they don't. Any idea what it is and if its cureable or i should just ignore it. Thank you guys for the help.

Greetings SterlingSilver,

It would be good if you could take her to see a Vet, but if you are unable to take her to a Vet at this time...let's move on.

It's hard to tell what is ailing your hen with only a cough as a symptom. You are right in separating her from the flock. This could be the beginning of a mycoplasma infection.

Keep her under observation, in case more symptoms develop.

Treatment of cough:
I would start by mixing 1 tsp honey with a pinch of cinnamon, in a shot glass. Then administer .5 mL with an oral syringe, every four hours.

Also, provide some of the immune system boosting tea below.

If her symptoms get worse, nasal discharge, sneezing etc. You may have to administer an antibiotic. Keep the hen in a warm area or hospital crate and out of drafts.

If it gets hard for her to breath, you can use a humidifier.

Provide good supportive care which includes: a soft diet of cooked grains like brown rice, pearl barley, oat groats, cooked vegies like mixed frozen, fresh diced fruits like grapes, apple, banana, a bit of cooked meat protein or scrambled egg. Offer moist feed daily.

You will also need to observe the rest of the flock for any symptoms, as they have been exposed.

As a precaution, you can medicate their water with Echinacea and Goldenseal tea. Take a teabag of each herb, and steep for 3 minutes in a cup of hot water. Pour into 1 gallon of water. Use for 7 days to boost immune system and prevent any mycoplasma from taking over. Make a fresh batch daily!

So, these are my thoughts on your hen's respiratory symptom. I hope this is helpful.

God Bless :)

thank you, i will try everything. She sounds a whole lot better now the noise is gone when she breaths and doesn't cough. Yesterday, my moms friend gave us a bale of straw and she ate a piece and it got caught in her throat maybe. I'm still going to keep her seperated from the rest of the flock.
