I don't think you can judge one dog based on the entire breed. I was told not to get my dog a few weeks ago because he's a Jack Russell Terrier and would hunt my chickens/cats/rabbits/ducks/turkeys. He DID want to, the first day, but has learned in the last few weeks that he's not allowed to chase and even snuggles with the rabbits that we have in the house. A dog CAN be taught not to chase and hunt. We had a basset hound that guarded the chickens and another terrier who could care less about any of them.. he'd rather do his business and get back inside the house, lol.

I didn't get a chance to read the rest of the replies, but I just had my first rat terrier/chicken experience this week and it was NOT good! My RT is normally very timid and laid back, but as soon as she was let out while the chickens were free ranging she was chasing after them and was just inches away from getting one (she had ran into the cow pasture after them and I couldn't get to her b/c of the electric barbed wire fence). I have always been concerned about my golden retriever mix b/c she's always shown more signs of aggression toward other animals (though never gone after them as far as I know) and she paid absolutely no attention to them. Go figure!
