Rat Terriers and Ducks?

I don't think you can judge one dog based on the entire breed. I was told not to get my dog a few weeks ago because he's a Jack Russell Terrier and would hunt my chickens/cats/rabbits/ducks/turkeys. He DID want to, the first day, but has learned in the last few weeks that he's not allowed to chase and even snuggles with the rabbits that we have in the house. A dog CAN be taught not to chase and hunt. We had a basset hound that guarded the chickens and another terrier who could care less about any of them.. he'd rather do his business and get back inside the house, lol.

I think it depends on the dog ya know! And the owner. My terriers did potty in the house when they were puppies as all puppies do until they learn. But it took only 2 months before we had them on a schedule. We kennel trained them for bedtime. If I hadn't then they would surley potty in the house at night. I think Terriers can be great dogs but it takes a lot of time and consistencey to stay on top of them. Mine are very active and busy all the time. They love attention and are very eager to please. I think for these breeds they key is a consistent schedule, and consistencey in obedience. Kinda like a kid with ADHD, they forget and need to be reminded all the time to behave, listen etc. Strict schedules work good for them too!

Thank you! Thats exactly what I was saying to myself reading this thread. I find it funny how people will get one dog of a specific breed and base all their knowledge on the one dog they've had.

I didn't get a chance to read the rest of the replies, but I just had my first rat terrier/chicken experience this week and it was NOT good! My RT is normally very timid and laid back, but as soon as she was let out while the chickens were free ranging she was chasing after them and was just inches away from getting one (she had ran into the cow pasture after them and I couldn't get to her b/c of the electric barbed wire fence). I have always been concerned about my golden retriever mix b/c she's always shown more signs of aggression toward other animals (though never gone after them as far as I know) and she paid absolutely no attention to them. Go figure!
