not sure about rats that mess with chickens, but the large rat snap traps with peanutbutter smeared on the part that would normally hold the cheese works great, they have to work harder for the food and always get caught. :)

We had a rat problem in our coop. Our solutions was...

    1) Put up food about 12in off ground. We hung it from the celing.

    2) We bought rat bait stations where the bait was linked in with the box so it could not be drug out. We stationed them to where we thought they were coming in.

    3) We checked the box daily. We found dead rats through the next week. Picked up and disposed of them. Not had a problem since. We keep rat boxes out and food up still. We check rat bait monthly. We also store food in 55 gallon plasitc trash can.

What does the food 12" high or hanging from the ceiling do?
